Masterclass – Practical Advice To Enhance Social Mobility Through Your Recruitment Process


Despite socio-economic status (SES) not being a legally protected characteristic, increasing numbers of organisations are seeking to address disparity in recruitment success in those from lower SES backgrounds. Indeed, Social Mobility came 3rd on the diversity agenda in a recent survey by the ISE’s Survey of Student Employers.

However, it is a relatively new area for many employers and guidance can be hard to come by. This session, run by experts in psychological assessment Sten10, will provide you with an overview of the challenges faced and a toolkit of practical, actionable advice to make immediate improvements to your recruitment processes. It will cover:

  • What practical support can employers give lower SES students that will make them more likely to apply for a role, remain in the process, perform at their best and be more likely to accept an offer?
  • What psychological differences exist between people of difference socio-economic status? How could this impact upon their assessment performance against different competencies / strengths?
  • How might assessor behaviour differ according to the SES of applicants? What can be done to minimise this?

Learning outcomes:

As a result of this session, you will learn:

  • Statistics about SES in recruitment that you can use to make the case for change internally.
  • Real life case study examples about how you can improve your selection processes to help facilitate stronger performance from those of lower SES background.
  • Discussion with other delegates to start forming an action plan for applying this learning back in your own company.
